Tarsus American College Introductory Film
SEV Indroductory Film
Dear Prospective Teacher,
Tarsus American College (TAC) is a high school which offers university preparatory education to Turkish students in grades 9-12. Prior to entering grade 9, all students must attend a preparatory (Prep) year during which the improvement of English language skills is emphasized. TAC was founded over 120 years ago by the American Board Heyeti (ABH) to serve as both a school and a cross-cultural link between Turkey and the United States.
SEV-Tarsus Elementary School (SEV) was founded in 1997 to provide high school preparatory education for students in grades K-8. The development of English language skills plays an important role for all students. Entry into TAC is not automatic. At the end of the eigth grade, all students must compete in national exams, the results of which determine to which high schools they can apply.
TAC has two sister high schools in Turkey: The American Collegiate Institute (ACI) in İzmir and Üsküdar American Academy (UAA) in Istanbul. Although these high schools were initially founded by American educators, they along with each of the associated SEV elementary schools are now operated by a secular Turkish foundation composed largely of graduates from the three high schools. The Sağlık ve Eğitim Vakfı (Health and Education Foundation) is thus the governing body which now oversees the high quality of education from kindergarten through high school.
Around one fourth of the faculty is international. Those who are married to Turkish nationals live throughout the Adana-Tarsus-Mersin region. Teachers recruited from overseas live in furnished apartments either on campus or in Tarsus itself. Educators who want to experience the real “Türkiye” will find that all colors of Turkey are represented especially in this area of the country. From friendly people to specialty foods, from historical sites to unique travel opportunities, all combine to offer a rich and rewarding cross-cultural experience. Tarsus American College (TAC) and SEV-Tarsus Elementary School (SEV) are both Turkish private schools for Turkish children operating strictly in accordance with the national school system. There are over 800 students in Grades K-12. The SEV Elementary students are day students who reside in the Adana-Tarsus-Mersin region. TAC also serves day students from the same region but in addition operates a boarding division for students from throughout Turkey. Both schools are located in garden-like settings and the majority of the buildings are historical in nature. Although each school has its own campus, the elementary school shares some of the buildings with the high school. The teaching staff includes Turkish faculty (75%), some of whom speak English. The English-speaking international faculty (25%) are generally from the USA, Canada, and Great Britain.
Tarsus American College offers a strong university preparatory academic program. All students follow the demanding Turkish national high school curriculum. Students are also encouraged to enroll in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) which, although optional, offers them additional qualifications for foreign university entrance. TAC’s academic program is supported by a wide variety of extra-curricular activities and clubs. Student participation in social service projects and opportunities remains also a high priority and keeps the ties to the local community strong.
At both the elementary and high school levels, students are exposed to programs involving international travel (MUN, ISTA, Comenius, etc.) so as encounter perspectives different than their own as well as to strengthen inter-cultural understanding.
Both TAC and SEV-Tarsus are accredited by the Turkish Ministry of Education and the Council of International Schools (CIS). TAC is additionally authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. To teach at either TAC or SEV Elementary, a prospective candidate must be eligible for a Turkish work visa. For visa approval, the requirements of the Turkish Ministry of Education and the Turkish Ministry of Labor stipulate that a teacher must have fulfilled both of the following two qualifications.
An undergraduate degree from an accredited, 4 year college/university in the subject area to be taught.
A teaching license in that subject area with appropriate grade level endorsement.
There are no exceptions to these requirements.
Please note that all social studies classes must be taught in Turkish by Turkish nationals.
At TAC, international faculty members will generally teach at the preparatory and grade 9-10 levels and/or in the IB Programme. IB experience as well as ESL training are additional qualifications taken into consideration when interviewing potential candidates.
To teach English in SEV Elementary, ESL/EFL teachers who have an undergraduate degree in English or elementary education are needed. The degree in elementary education which is common in North America applies generally only to grades 1-5. Middle school teachers must have an undergraduate degree in English with middle school licensure.
Beyond the academic credentials, the school also looks at past experience in international or intercultural working environments, professional collegiality skills, and educational experience outside of the classroom such as sponsoring clubs, activities, and service learning experience.
